This is example for those who have a 24″ 8,1 iMac with ATI 2600 Pro with OS X Lion (10.7.3) installed

Below you can find freeze problem solution for iMac 2008

BEWARE: you do it on your own risk!!!

  1. MAKE A BACKUP! – use TimeMachine or just copy your files to external drive
  2. Download and open the 10.6.2 kext files
  3. Download Kext Helper (from Helper from my host.
  4. Go to: Apple Menu -> About This Mac -> More Info… -> Graphics/Display
  5. and find your graphics card’s model. (In my case the ATI RadeonHD2600)
  6. Take ONLY the files titled ATIFramebuffer.kext, ATISupport.kext, and ATI2600Controller.kext *(IF YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT GENERATION OF CARD THEN SELECT THE FILE WITH YOUR CARD’S NUMBER)* and put them on your desktop. TIP: if you dont know what file is your’s graphic card driver just select all files and drop it to the Kext Helper
  7. Open Kext Helper and drag the three files into the top drop spot.
  8. Enter your password in the text entry field.Kext helper with selected files

Hi. I followed these instructions perfectly, and now I’m having nothing but kernel panics. I can’t even boot in safe mode. Is there anything I can do to relieve this? I don’t think I can boot in 64.. Am I screwed?

      1. adminpisze:

Hi, please try to boot into safe mode (by prsessing Shift when boot) and run in terminal those instructions:

        cp -R /System/Library/Extensions/ATISupport.kext /Backup Extensions
        rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/ATISupport.kext
        cp -R /System/Library/Extensions/ATIFramebuffer.kext /Backup Extensions
        rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/ATIFramebuffer.kext
        cp -R /System/Library/Extensions/ATI2600Controller.kext /Backup Extensions
        rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/ATI2600Controller.kext
        cp -R /Backup Extensions/ATISupport.kext /System/Library/Extensions/
        cp -R /Backup Extensions/ATIFramebuffer.kext /System/Library/Extensions/
        cp -R /Backup Extensions/ATI2600Controller.kext /System/Library/Extensions/
        chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/ATISupport.kext
        chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/ATIFramebuffer.kext
        chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/ATI2600Controller.kext
        chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/ATISupport.kext
        chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/ATIFramebuffer.kext
        chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/ATI2600Controller.kext
        touch /System/Library/Extensions
        sudo -k

Of course if you have diferent GPU change ATI2600… to correct one.

    Hi Krzysztof:
I tried your kext solution with my Imac7,1 and ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro, with Mac OS X 10.6.8 installed.
It didn’t work for me, After rebooting a kernel panic appeared (I only used the next files: ATIFramebuffer.kext, ATISupport.kext, and ATI2400Controller.kext) .
Any idea how to fix that?

    1. adminpisze:

Similar situation happens only once, it is probably kexthelper problem. It also happens when you manually put the files and don’t change their permissions.

  3. Heathpisze:

Hi, I tried this as well but it didn’t work. iMac8,1 ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro, with Mac OS X 10.6.8 installed.
After rebooting I also got the kernel panic. Tried to reboot a number of times.
I ran the helper tool exactly as the instructions stated.
Just wanted to post this for others. Thanks.

  4. Heathpisze:

Update to my previous comment. To fix the kernel panic you need to switch to 64-bit kernel mode for 10.6.8. Simple way is to hold 6 and 4 on reboot. Google for more info…

Hi, I’m having lots of freeze problems with my iMac mid2007 – graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT.

I’m trying to see if this helps. So far only thing I can report is that the graphics performance of certain apps is very degraded. For instance launching Launch Pad is very slow, you can see each step in detail. Also if you open newer version of iPhoto and drag window around screen you get weird blocking effects.

I would be willing to live with all this if it stops the freezing.

Will monitor situation and report back.

  6. jimlongopisze:

Well it solves the freeze problem, but unfortunately it also causes many rendering problems.

The most serious so far is that iWork (Pages and Numbers) are invisible pages – the information is there, but the page is blank. So, unworkable unfortunately.

For the record that is a mid2007 iMac with Lion 10.7.5. If I could try later versions of 10.6 drivers maybe that would work, if I find some time I might try earlier versions of the drivers from TimeMachine backups.

I had a similar problem once, when system not load kext at boot time. Your system is running on a 32 or 64 bit? As I know, a 32-bit system has a problem with the patch kext.

  7. Shakey102001pisze:

It worked on my iMac8,1 ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro, with Mac OS X 10.6.8 installed. Just make sure u boot with the 64-bit kernel!! as explained above by imlongo pisze

    1. adminpisze:

Yes, my iMac runs it 64bit mode.

  8. Rodrigo Martinspisze:

that’s amazing.. thank you so much.. I was desperate and this solved the problem here!!! 🙂

Just want to share that I installed it on my iMac 8,1 OSX 10.8.4 and running good after few restart and multi applications running at the same time to overwhelm the graphics card. 12 hours past seems ok. No crashing for the moment. Thank you for this.

I have an iMAC Early 2008 which does not boots anymore. It frezzes on a White Screen…. But in SAFE MODE it works! It seems a Video Card Problem.

I tried your instructions but the problems remains. Maybe Did I forgot something? Did you have any advice?
